I have thought about different options:
- being Catholic might be nice once you integrate your vassals. Lots of cardinals could come from there. Plus, you don't need any conversion job.
- Protestantism is the historical one, allows for an easier HREmperorship after the league wars, might allow some events, but it needs lots of conversion and the bonuses are meh...
- Reformed. Sounds good because Denmark is a trade-leaning country. But it also requires conversion, and you'll be more or less religiously isolated after that, because usually very few people become Reformed. Being HREmperor is also a bit harder, since it needs a certain event after certain conditions are met.
- Orthodox: I could conquer Russia and convert that way. But I am relatively historical in my games and I see this as a huge blasphemy.
So, what's your advice fellow EU4 gamer?

Ibadi for the +goods produced modifer combined with the Skane market modifier
I usally wait +- 20 years after the CoR appear: If there are many protestant/reformed countries I convert, if not, I stay catholic
(I also dont think denmark/fully integrated scandinavia has a high change of getting cardinals but that could be me)

Reformed is best, with humanism, there will be no rebel problem, plus religious unity stays at hundred percent even if the centres go into Denmark.

That's the kind of Blasphemy most of us can get behind.
Protestantism is actually good if you're going to colonise because of the colony growth . I suspect this was to cater to English colonisation in earlier game versions that didn't have Anglicanism (and then Anglicanism didn't get settler bonuses).
So protestantism works if you're going 'Full-Vinland' and claiming North America for Cod and King.......
(I'll also mention the parliamentary reform for monarchy due to the +1 settler and +20 settlement growth as a debate issue - too bad only England can get it straight off the bat).

Cardinals have a higher chance of spawning in high-development provinces, and Scandinavia (esp. Norway) doesn't have many of those. Actively developing provinces should change that of course, but if you're play style isn't geared towards province development (or you don't have the relevant expansion), then expect the fewer cardinals.

About the time the Reformation begins is when you should be looking to start chewing your way into the HRE, so the correct answer to this is: Whichever religion allows you eat the most HRE provinces for the least amount of trouble.

I second that.
Now if only the future Nordic DLC reworks Norse and make it so you can go and become Norse, raid Europe, burn cities and get a ton of missions, I'll be happy to rate Norse as the best religion in the game.
After the treatment that Hussite got with Emperor, I think Norse will get some love, someday, eventually, hopefully.

If we're going to get that, I'd like to see Hellenism added as a choice to the Custom Nation religions. I've played as a custom lost Viking colony before, but my idea for a custom Atlantis has yet to be fulfilled.

Completely depends.
Stay as catholic to integrate subjects, then change to Orthodox to smash everyone else.
That, or you change to whatever religion mostly dominates the HRE by becoming emperor and having fun there...

Protestant is still the best, except if the council of trent gives you a permanent -80 malus with all catholic nation's. Of course if you could get orthodox rebels to fire by taking finland, that might be an even better option.

Another reason to stay catholic longer is DoF, which can make expanding in the HRE quite a pain in the ass. I would suggest switching to Protestant/Reformed as soon as you have plenty of Protestant/Reformed countries to attack.

It all depends on the what's going on in your game, and how you play. A lot of people will tell you that Orthodox is the best Christian religion, but they are wrong and only say that because they saw some youtuber say it. If you are playing tall Anglican by far is best; Yes Orthodox has the 10% dev icon, but Anglican's passive bonus is -10% dev cost and +50% innovativeness gain. Very powerful for tall play(Before 1.31 screwed everything up). Protestant's is good for tall and military, you can get space marines with it. It all depends on what you want to do in your campaign.
