With nearly 59 percent of the vote, Huckabee was re-elected to a full term as lieutenant governor, defeating Democratic challenger Charlie Cole Chaffin. Huckabee received $71,500 from Action America, a nonprofit organization, for speaking fees and travel expenses while serving as lieutenant governor. R. J. In November 1998, by beating former colonel Gene McVay in the primary and Jonesboro attorney Bill Bristow in the general election, Huckabee was elected to a whole four-year term, becoming the state’s third-elected Republican governor following Reconstruction.
