UJcDV | UJcDV Member 2003-Aug-15 3:37 pm Comcast Repsoncible for Massive Power OutageDoh! They did it again!!! You should have seen it, power goes out..comcast trucks EVERYWHERE! You see they HAVE to be responsible for it as they say they are ALWAYS on. And I sure as heck wasn't online. I see a massive frivolous lawsuit in the near future! |

UJcDV | UJcDV to J D McDorce Member 2003-Aug-15 4:15 pm Re: Comcast Repsonsible for Massive Power OutageNot sure about the digital phones. The cell towers were working on battery power. The IP center in Ann Arbor went down before some people even lost power in their homes. I have never ever seen Ypsi so dark. I hear out your way it was mass traffic jams. |

firebird1 | firebird1 Member 2003-Aug-15 4:22 pm Don't ever give up your landline!! If the cable is not cut it will always work. Telco's build their "old" landline system like a battleship...thats why it costs a little more, thats why it works. Did you see those people lining up at the payphones? They run on DC, have batteries in the central offices and have generators to back up the batteries. You get what you pay for...... |

sunilonln | sunilonln to J D McDorce Member 2003-Aug-15 5:42 pm Re: Comcast Repsoncible for Massive Power OutageIf you are talking about ATTBI's digital phone service, ATTBI had installed a UPS for the coaxial>phone converter on the side of my house. That keeps it going while a power outage - signal over coaxial is still there, you usually don't realize it because you can't turn on your TV or computer. On the same note, if you have regular landline service, you can still place calls during a power outage (granted that you aren't using a cordless phone). |

That's NOT true, they have backup generators just like any other phone service! I would switch to their dig phone service if i could. |

TechnoScott | TechnoScott to UJcDV Premium Member 2003-Aug-15 7:25 pm Comcast rolls out when power outages happen because when the juice comes back on, we want to be on backup power in each node to prevent the system from getting fried from a surge when it comes back on. |

I DO have a generator and cable was dead as a doornail .... needed external antenna for tv news .... however, since I do have the generator, and telephone service is rock solid versus cable, my DSL connection is smooth as can be througout this disaster the area is suffering !!! |

Kip patterson | Kip patterson to UJcDV Premium Member 2003-Aug-15 8:54 pm Don't lock the thread - we're entitled to some phone after all the hassle over caps, tech support, etc. In our area Insight has installed backup generators (natural gas-powered) on their entire cable system, so the phones will stay up. Many of these generators (Actually, they are new power supplies with generators and batteries in them) are mounted up on telephone poles. I can just imagine the 911 calls now: "Some damn fool has hoisted his lawnmower up the power pole in my back yard and I can't sleep!" Even as we speak, the Insight area is recovering from a serious storm that left some streets waist deep. My wife was nearly an hour late getting home from work because of high water. Yessir, Comcast surely must be the culprit that took out 50 million consumers. I remember the 1965 outage - one of the consequences was a serious overload in the maternity wards 9 months later. I think that Comcast should change their AUP to provide free diapers for each child in the affected area born between May 10 and May 20th, 2004. Actually, that would be a nice promotional campaign - certificates for free diapers because Comcast could not entertain you. Movies imitate life - check this out: »www.tvguide.com/Movies/d ··· MI=26311 One hell of a cast. |

UJcDV | UJcDV Member 2003-Aug-15 9:06 pm This thread was intentionaly made to be a JOKEIt's funny Just make a topic and the conversation takes care of itself. The regulars I see here actually reply with real info even though I know and THEY know that I was just KIDDING about Comcast being responsible for the power outage. I always wondered why I see so many Comcast trucks when the power is out..and believe me they are out in force as my power goes out all the time so I see them all the time. The phone thing is a valid issue. I decided to stay with my regular landline service and not go with the digital that Comcast offers as I pay them enough already. Comcast offers TV, Internet and now Phone service. I wonder when they actually will start offering power over cable lines...or better yet...Natural Gas..hehe Now that would be a feat. (Im not seriously advocating Comcast pushing NG through a cable line) Others who reply, take what was posted (and themselves probably) too seriously. Sheesh we just went through something (and some are still going through it) that will go into the history books. The last time something like this happened they made movies about it, wrote books & news articles for years afterwards. Considering what happened then, and how long it took to get the power back up. I would say that our public utilities and businesses (including Comcast) did a remarkable job in 24 hours. Some of you maybe remember last year I made a thread blaming Comcast for my power being out. It was a JOKE then and so is this one. People responded with some good humor. I just made one again because this was a BIG power outage. |

Here for instance, when the power went, so did the DHCP server, it took about 20 minutes for the damn thing to reboot and start accepting clients, haven't they ever heard of a UPS? My god... |

| J D McDorce to sunilonln Premium Member 2003-Aug-16 12:33 pm Effects of power outage on userssaid by sunilonln:If you are talking about ATTBI's digital phone service, ATTBI had installed a UPS for the coaxial>phone converter on the side of my house. I have heard that Comcast does something similar locally, however, UPS units can only provide juice for a finite period of time (varies by load). I would imagine that similar power backup provisions are provided all of the way back to the switching unit. I do know one thing - I am certainly glad that I was not reliant on a third party VoIP provider during the blackout. |

JonR800 | JonR800 to UJcDV Premium Member 2003-Aug-16 2:42 pm Digital phone and power outage.Hmmm I don't know what you guys are talking about. My phone lasted a few hours into the power outage. After that our phone service went dead. Meanwhile friends using SBC continued to have phone service. I'm really disappointed in comcast for not being able to supply phone service during an outage. A few side notes: As for cell phones. Tmobile was down within an hour. A few of our Nextel and Verizon phones lasted into the night, but dropped after that. |
